Description
Herman Clark and the Salem Bridge Shelf ClocksFrom about 1817 until about 1845 a rack-and-snail striking brass movement shelf clock was manufactured in the Naugatuck River Valley of Connecticut. From its development and early manufacture in the portion of Plymouth, Connecticut known as Plymouth Hollow until its later manufacture and demise at Salem Bridge, the quality of this clock movement was maintained at a high level. Without a doubt, this rack-and-snail striking brass shelf clock movement was the finest in quality production and design of any manufactured Connecticut clock.
Despite the evidence of the development of the original "Salem Bridge" movement by the famous Eli Terry of Plymouth, the true hero of the story of this clock is Herman Clark, perhaps America's most overlooked clockmaking notable. Though hardly receiving a mention in clockmaking histories, Clark's clocks surpassed the quality of manufactured products of Eli Terry, Seth Thomas, Silas Hoadley, Chauncy Jerome, Joseph Ives and others often lauded as Connecticut's greatest clockmakers. This witting is an attempt to give Mr. Clark and his associates some of the credit they have long deserved.
