MEASUREMENT OF TIME
MAN AND SHADOW
During the Attic period
the Greeks ascertained
the time by measuring a
shadow, but how it was
done is not quite clear.
Salmasius asserted that
a mans. shadow was
measured by the foot,
probably another rnans
foot. This is con?rmed a
by Flacourt in his travels
in Madagascar in the 17th
century. Flacourt found
the Malay population had
learned the divisions of
the day from the Arabs,
who made use of the
shadow of a man to tell
the time, and measured
by the length of the foot.
