Vintage Roland CS-10Stereo Micro Monitor
Desktop Monitor Speakers
Description
Up for sale is a vintage
Roland CS-10 Stereo
Micro Monitor Desktop
Speaker Unit which
comes with its original
manual and power
supply along with a
pair of RCA to stereo
jack cable connectors.
The original power
adapter for this unit
is not working; as it
stopped doing so
ages ago. Only
recently was an
attempt made to
fix it by opening it
up using a 4mm
ratchet wrench and
replacing the 3300uF
16V electrolytic
capacitor, however,
that much needed
replacement seemed
to do absolutely
nothing for the power
supply, as it just
doesn't seem to
power up the unit
when it's plugged in.
(See the ninth picture
for the before and
after shots of the
replacment cap).
I suspect that it could
be the plug itself that's
developed a fault, as
there only seems to
be continuity on the
negative lead and
not the positive.
Upon testing the
prongs for continuity
both leads chimed
when the multimeter
probes were placed
on the prongs and
on the soldered
connections,
indicating that
that side of the
unit does seem
to be working.
I'm not an expert
when it comes to
fixing power bricks,
but that's what seems
to be wrong with this
adapter, as the three
diodes did not exhibit
any continuity on them;
thus indicating that
they're still good and
not grounded. The
only other component
that I did not test
was the resistor, so
that could also be
potential issue.
I've also included a
vintage Radio Shack
power brick which
has proven to be a
good substitute for
this unit, as it does
manage to power
the unit on, even
though its rated at
1300mA at 16W
while the original
Roland adapter
is rated at
1200mA at 25W.
The unit itself
exhibits quite a
bit of yellowing
and dust build up
on it, which was
cleaned up with
Isopropyl alcohol
for the most part,
but there are still
certain nooks and
crannies that could
use an even deeper
clean and an almost
certain retrobrighting
session. The unit is
designed to have only
the volume and tone
controls work when
the plugs are connected
to input 2... input 1 for
some reason or another
is not meant for these
controls to work while
plugged into it; as
noted on the second
page of the manual.
There are also a pair of
RCA to stereo connections
included in this lot, one
of which has red and blue
connections while the
other is red and black.
The red and black one is
also noticeably shorter
than the other, but they
both can hook up to
the rear of the unit
without any issues.
The unit was tested
and found to be in
working order. There
is a bit of static on
the volume control
when adjusted, but
I'm pretty sure it's
simply just a matter
of adding some DeOxit
onto the pot in order
to get rid of the
scratchiness.
The headphones port
has not been tested
as I don't seem to
have a pair at hand
to test it out with.
This unit is meant to
support old school
CRT monitors and
you can see some
scratches on the top
of the unit which
were caused by
these old monitors
back in the day.
I've had this unit
for ages, and it was
placed in a storage bin
for a greater part of
the last couple of
decades, however,
amazingly, it still
seems to work just
like it always has.
The underside of
the unit has a serial
number that reads
BE73111, and the
model, of course,
is a CS-10.
These units are
getting harder
to find nowadays,
and there seems
to be a demand for
them in the retro PC
enthusiast community,
so here's your chance
to get one that comes
with its original
manual and a
convenient pair of
audio cables, along
with the original
AC Adapter (which will
need to be serviced)
and a suitable replacement
vintage Radio Shack AC
Adapter (which may
also be collectible
in its own right).
